Thoughts on Accelerating Innovation Through Diversity

Happy Fav Five Friday!

Hello, I’m glad to see you here today! Thank you for your patience while I try to get back on track with my blogging habits. I have been experimenting with putting myself into situations that help me stretch beyond my comfort zone. Some of these activities include volunteering, attending events that I know nothing about, and also simply starting conversations with people I don’t know. I find myself learning the most from people that are very different from me and wanted to share three ideas on how Diversity Accelerates Innovation.

Avoiding Group Think

You may of heard the phrase “Birds of a feather flock together”. I recommend spreading your wings and fly with some new birds to new places. You may also want to swap your wings for gills. This is so easy today with the power of Social Networks in the Enterprise and around the globe. It’s also super easy to invite new friends to share lunch or coffee.

Discovering Your Passion

We live in an age of “information overload”, so it’s good to find some quiet time to process the information you learned during the course of the day. Taking the time to evaluate how information, your connections and environment align with your values can help you discover new ways to fuel your passions. This time can also help you discover new passions.

Standing Up and Standing Out

What value does the “yes man/woman” add to anything? The “yes man” can easily be replaced and at very little cost. Blending in is a method of being invisible. The greatest change we see in the world comes form people that Stand Up and Stand Out. A certain liberation occurs when we reach deep within ourselves to find the courage to share new ideas in a collaborative manner.

Fav Five Faces

Here are just a few new friends that have connected me to new people and new ideas this week. You might be familiar with “Fantasy Football Teams” and such, well this is my “Fantasy Innovation Team” this week. I bet we would see some very innovative solutions, if this team worked together.

Who would be on your Fantasy Innovation Team this week?

A teacher of ours at the GreenMBA, Julianne Maurseth, likes to say, “People gather and things happen.” And what is the most wonderful thing that can happen when people gather? That would be serendipity.

Serendipity is the emergence of desirable novelty from a chance encounter, the discovery of something wonderful, unknown and unpredictable. It is the act of unexpected cross-pollination, the seed of something new.

Government 2.0: The Use of Drupal and Open Source Technologies

Happy Fav Five Friday!

The web and other news sources have been buzzing about the White House site using open source technology, Drupal. Many influential people have shared their thoughts on this subject, but I like this post by Tim O’Reilly the best. He makes a good point about how the Government has been using open source, but it’s adoption by http://whitehouse.gov should improve the government adoption rate. The New York Times also published an article titled “Drupal Moves into the White House”, which you can find here. I recommend you review these two articles, because they are packed with related resources.

Calling a Friend with a Coconut

The right tool for the job is important! Can you make a phone from a coconut? You probably could, if you were a professor stranded on a desert island with the Skipper and crew. Would you hang a picture with a shovel? Would you cook a meal in the dishwasher? These ideas may seem silly, but most jobs are easier with the right strategy and correct tools. The mission is better served when more options are available. Drupal is not going to be the “magic bullet” that kills all overspending in Government IT, but it is good to see more tools available in the Government 2.0 toolbox.

What is this “Drupal, Open Source PHP CMS” Thing?

Drupal is a free software package that allows an individual or a community of users to easily publish, manage and organize a wide variety of content on a website. Tens of thousands of people and organizations are using Drupal to power scores of different web sites for Enterprise 2.0 solutions, Government 2.0 platforms, Social Networking portals, and much more.

The built-in functionality, combined with dozens of freely available add-on modules, will enable features such as: Collaborative authoring environments, Collaborative authoring environments, Blogs, Discussion Forms, Podcasts, and much more.

Drupal is open-source software distributed under the GPL (“GNU General Public License”) and is maintained and developed by a community of thousands of users and developers. Please visit http://drupal.org for additional information.

Drupal (#OpenSource CMS): Tutorials & Webinars for Beginners

5+2 Webcasts About Drupal

These “how to” Drupal webcasts are part of my favorite Drupal collection. You will find five presentations to help you quickly understand what Drupal is and what it can do. I have also included the important “Drupal Security” presentation, a quick overview before you buy the book. I added the “Drupal Garden” video, because it allows you to see how simple & cool content management can be. You should also listen to the “JackBe” video “Developer Community Ignites Customer Engagement, Reduces Costs and Delivers Measurable ROI with Drupal”, he uses some very interesting words to describe Drupal. You can review other Drupal presentations here.

The Future Gov 2.0 Toolbox Will Hopefully Also Contain Tools Like Zend Framework

Extending the art & spirit of PHP, Zend Framework is based on simplicity, object-oriented best practices, corporate friendly licensing, and a rigorously tested agile codebase. Zend Framework is focused on building more secure, reliable, and modern Web 2.0 applications & web services, and consuming widely available APIs from leading vendors like Google, Amazon, Yahoo!, Flickr, as well as API providers and cataloguers like StrikeIron and ProgrammableWeb. Learn more at http://framework.zend.com

Social Media, Widgets, & Gadgets with OpenSocial?

How about Government web sites with customizable widgets, like the iGoogle dashboard? Apache Shindig is an OpenSocial container and helps you to start hosting OpenSocial apps quickly by providing the code to render gadgets, proxy requests, and handle REST and RPC requests. Apache Shindig’s goal is to allow new sites to start hosting social apps in under an hour’s worth of work. Learn more here http://incubator.apache.org/shindig/

What about Open Source Training and Education?

Drupal does not offer any type of “Developer Certification” at this time. It just does not seem to be part of their business model. You can become “Third Party Drupal Certified”. Will Government 2.0 Developers really need certification? There are a few places you can get an “open source” type of certificaiton. Zend offers Training and Certification Programs. You may want to take a look at O’Reilly Technology School. O’Reilly has been spreading the knowledge of innovators for close to 30 years. With an academic approach to publishing, trend spotting, research, and conferences, O’Reilly has gathered and distributed the information needed for innovation, helping to drive the development of the Internet as seen today.

The Web 2.0 Summit conversation is no longer just about the Web. Now is the time to put the power of the Web to work—its technologies, its business models, and perhaps most importantly, its philosophies of openness, collective intelligence, and transparency. http://www.web2summit.com/web2009

The Web 2.0 Event of the Year – Web 2.0 Summit – Web Squared #w2s

There were so many great events in the past few days. The big events that caught my eye were: Web 2.0 Summit 2009 #w2s , Blog World – New Media Expo 2009 #bwe09, and TWTRCON DC 09 #twtrcon. The Summit was outstanding and easy to follow online. John Battelle, Tim O’Reilly, and all the people supporting this event did an outstanding job! There was an avalanche of news released about all levels of technology, including Twitter, Google, Bing, Facebook, and so much more. This event was like an intellectual amusement park with thrill after thrill. Thanks to @JohnBattelle, @timoreilly, and the crew at @web2summit for another thrilling event. Thanks to all the guests, attendees, and fans for sharing #w2s

How to Use Social Media & Web 2.0 for Collaboration

Happy Fav Five Friday!

Social Media & Web 2.0 Tools for Collaboration

You may be aware of the trends about “doing more with less”, especially during these tough economic times. We are also becoming more involved with keeping our planet healthy. More people and organizations are adopting “green technology”. More people are working from home and more organizations are moving towards dispersed work environments. This is a “Win Win Win” trend that supports healthy lifestyles, lower costs, and a greener planet. More meetings can be done in virtual environments, which leads to less travel, saves time, and reduces our ecological footprint. More productivity can take place in these virtual environments for the same reasons. Most work-product and communications can be captured in a centralized location other than our inboxes. Processes and Products will improve through Collective Intelligence and Crowd Sourcing.

The Business Value of Web 2.0 for Governments & Organizations

Organizations and individuals are involved with Web 2.0 and Social Media for different reasons at different times. These tools can be used as communication channels to support brand awareness, customer communications, collaboration, staying in touch with mom, and countless other needs. Web 2.0 is not just for collaboration or marketing, it’s a part of our culture.

5 Web 2.0 Tools for Social Media Collaboration

Google provides what seems to be an infinite amount of tools and services. You can sign up with Google absolutely free. Take a look at some of these tools and services Google provides http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/

Upload and share your PowerPoint presentations, Word documents and Adobe PDF Portfolios on SlideShare. Share publicly or privately. Add audio to make a webinar. http://www.slideshare.net/

Share and discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world. http://twitter.com/

More than 48,000 independently produced Web shows use blip.tv to reach more than 22,000,000 people. They distribute more than 2.4 million episodes from these shows across the entire video Internet and onto television screens across the country. http://blip.tv

bit.ly allows users to shorten, share, and track links (URLs). Reducing the URL length makes sharing easier. bit.ly can be accessed through their website, bookmarklets and a robust and open API. http://bit.ly/

Mixing Social Media Tools in Enterprise 2.0

Happy Fav Five Friday!

Enterprise 1.0

I love social media, but I work on Enterprise 2.0 solutions. I have worked with government and commercial clients developing collaboration and knowledge management tools long before the cool “Enterprise 2.0” term was coined. The Enterprise 1.0 approach was a small team making decisions on tools with a rigid taxonomy that had little or no regard to workflows and existing business processes. Have you been around long enough to remember the early push for repeatable processes in government agencies? You may remember the big push for Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) and then Six Sigma to help improve business processes in government agencies. Fun times right? A lot of people were pushing tools down the chain and it felt we had a process for our process .

Enterprise 2.0

Enterprise 2.0 is more than blogs, wikis, forums, bookmarking and other web-based technologies. A successful implementation of Enterprise 2.0 will see rapid adoption when the tools map to existing processes and the structure reflects the organization. Some benefits of Enterprise 2.0 should be immediately inherent and the long term value should be understood. The information usually has a folksonomy structure to support a collaborative environment.

Social Media

Social Media is a collection of user-generated content usually shared in a very public way. Some people and organizations use social media to manage their brand. The birth of Web 2.0 naturally led to the explosive growth of social media.

5 Differences Between Enterprise 2.0 & Social Media

You may have a few things to add to this list and I hope you do.

Social Media is about User-Generated Content, while Enterprise 2.0 is about harnessing the Collective Intelligence.

Social Media is about social perspective, while Enterprise 2.0 is about business perspective.

Social Media is about spending time, while Enterprise 2.0 is about saving time.

Social Media is about random knowledge, while Enterprise 2.0 is about knowledge management.

Social Media is usually very public, while Enterprise 2.0 is usually behind a firewall.

Fav Five Friday: 5 Tips on Social Media Tools for Virtual Meetings

Do you remember all the hype about virtual meetings in Second Life? Second Life is a free online virtual world. There still seems to be a little buzz about using Second Life for virtual meetings. I don’t see massive benefits of using this space. Seems like others are over the hype.

How Presenters Can Take Advantage of Social Media Tools

Connecting Attendees With Your Presentation By Using Twitter

Twitter is a micro-blogging tool more attendees are using these days during meetings to post tweets, small messages. There are plenty of twitter tools and applications for mobile devices too. The presenter at the meeting can announce the hash tag for twitter users. A hash tag is a method of connecting tweets to your presentation by adding # (the pound symbol) to a key word. Attendees of Web 2.0 Expo used #w2e. The hash tag can also be used on other social media web sites to connect images, videos, slides, & conversations on Google’s YouTube, Yahoo’s Flkr, SlideShare, & Blogs.

Presenters can stay connected with their colleagues and get instant assistance for those difficult questions.

Presenters can harness the power of Collective Intelligence by capturing input, questions, answers, & comments with Twitter.

There is plenty of information available on the web on how presenters can take advantage of Twitter.

How to Present While People are Twittering

Blogging During Meetings

Presenters should be aware that more attendees are using social media tools like blogs to capture meeting information. Presenters can also harness the power of social media by using their own blog to connect with people and share information.

Presenters should remember to include links in their presentations. Bloggers could include links to your presentation, LinkedIn profile, Facebook profile, Twitter account, blog, web site, and more. If the presentation is available online, then give that link early to give bloggers and other attendees enough time to access it so they can follow along. Twitter users love to tweet links too.

Some attendees are required to submit a report about attending your meeting. It’s easier and the report is more detailed when it can be created closer to real time. A blog seems to be the social media tool of choice for this task. Blogging about a presentation or during a meeting also creates a collaborative space for other to share relative information. Blogging has many more benefits than writing up some email or word document that may be read once or twice before it’s filled in the black hole. Presenters, please be kind to your bloggers and give them space, power, and connections to get online.

How Conference Organizers Can Use Blogs

Sharing Your Presentation on SlideShare

Upload and share your PowerPoint presentations and Word documents on SlideShare. Share publicly or privately. Add audio to make a webinar. SlideShrare also has a simple API to allow users to embed presentations into Facebook, Blogs, and web sites. Learn more at SlideShare.

Running an Effective Teleconference or Virtual Meeting

Virtual teams are becoming commonplace, but the old rules for running a meeting don’t necessarily apply. Managers need to learn new skills to keep people engaged and to use the time (and technology) effectively. These tips will make your next remote meeting a success. Learn more here.

Using Bar Camp Event and Content Management System

Barcamp Event and Content Management System: This is a web-based-wordpress-powered system aimed at helping people running unconferences manage their event’s content in a more organized manner. Learn more here.

Social Media Platforms For Enterprise 2.0 Solutions

Have A Plan For your Social Media

You can spend a lot of time and money building the wrong thing or building the right thing wrong. Invest time with the stakeholders and users before thinking about technology. What are your objectives? What are YOUR benefits to using social media in your enterprise 2.0 solution? Who is your target audience? Your target audience will resist participating, if they can not see any benefits. Your benefits include the benefits of users, managers, and your organization as a whole. What does your organization hope to accomplish with Enterprise 2.0 or Social Media?

I have discovered many possible social media platforms for my enterprise 2.0 solution. The choices are almost overwhelming. Building an enterprise 2.0 solution requires an understanding of the needs and current work-flows. I don’t believe there is a “One-Size-Fits-All” solution. You may be familiar with the phrase “No need to re-invent the wheel”. There are a lot of MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube type of scripts out there that would give you the ability to emulate these web sites in your enterprise 2.0 platform. You may need to ask yourself about the benefits and examine your objectives. These sites are great at what they are and may be meeting their owner’s objectives. How important is it for you to know your colleagues’ favorite movies or music? Do you have a need for instant web/mobile communications? A Twitter type of tool is good if your needs require and one or more of your objectives can be met with a micro-blogging solution. You can piece different blogging, bookmarking, forum, media packages together or work with one of the social media platform bundles below. You may even want to create a hybrid.

Social Media Platform Software and Services

Elgg: powerful, professional social networking

A few days ago I was listening to President Obama Address to Joint Session of Congress. He said some amazing things and delivered a vision of hope during these trying times. I was very interested in one part, “a cure for cancer in our time”. Did I hear that right? A CURE FOR CANCER! Imagine this, how incredible would that be, if this did not sound amazing? What if we could talk about it like “cancer?, Oh yeah that was a disease that used to kill people.” Can you imagine talking about cancer like it was an old 8 track tape player? Children would barely know it even was? Imagine all the other things the medical community could do after they are free from cancer.

I might be a little sensitive to this topic, because I am a cancer survivor. I was dianogsed with cancer when I was 17 (more than 25 years ago). I survived a year of chemotherapy and extensive out patient treatments. Only by the grace of God, I am here today! I have seen this terrible disease take the lives of brillant, beautiful people and my prayers go out to their family and friends. I am willing to do what ever I can to help eliminate cancer. I believe there are a few other people out there that are willing to make a difference and want to change the world. Will you help?

Can Social Media Cure Cancer?

Do you remember the “Stand Up” campaign? It’s still going strong and you can get involved. This is a great example of how social media is making a difference. This is an example of combining forces & resources into a synergy that is changing the world.

Happy Fav Five Friday!

Masters of Social Media are putting “Social” into Media while personalities shine!

I am writing this because I realize that sometimes I forget basic social graces when communicating in the social media world. A few days ago my close friend emails me a message. A few minutes later she emails me again. About an hour later she calls me and asks me if I saw her email. I told her that I thought I saw something in my inbox that looked like it might of been for me from her email address. The body of the two emails were never addressed to me. There was nothing toward the top like “Good morning Dan”, “Hello Dan”, “hi dan”, matter of fact, my name was not there at all. No “Hey, how’s it going?”, just plowing right into the announcement, like spam mail. No signature toward the bottom. I barely pay attention to my email because of social media, especially tools like Twitter. I believe if it’s really that important, I will get an instant message, a tweet, or a phone call, just like this day. I am using email less because I am committed to social media.

I am amazed with the people I have met in the social media world

I have the social graces of a backward 12 year old, but I’m learning. I have surrounded myself with mentors, I read something to improve these skills everyday, and I talk with people to get all the help I need. Here are some resources that will help you on your successful path to understanding social media.

Zend Demo Videos: Fav Five Friday

Happy Friday! I have been helping people with web-based solutions for years. Some of my projects have included simple brochure type of web sites, others have been dynamic, database driven web sites with a huge number of people rapidly accessing components while expecting instant responses from the application. Most of this code has been written in PHP with tools like Adobe Dreamweaver. A while back I posted an article about installing the Zend Framework and a quick article about “New Zend Demo – Developing Rich Internet Applications (RIAs)“. Zend has an endless amount of tools, training, education, & resources to help you with your social media platform development, which should be part of your Enterprise 2.0 strategy.

Using Zend Studio to develop your Social Media Platform for your Enterprise 2.0 Solution

When developing PHP Solutions for Social Media Platforms, I prefer a robust toolset to help create exciting user interfaces, especially in the Enterprise.

I found these videos very helpful and I just wanted to share them with you to hopefully help you in your quest for developing rich internet applications for your social media platforms.
