Government 2.0: Government as a Platform – Aspen Ideas Festival 2009 #aif09
Happy Fav Five Friday!
I believe Tim O’Reilly (@timoreilly) outdid himself here. His presentation at Aspen Ideas Festival on “Government as a Platform” was outstanding. I encourage you to take a quick look at the presentation below. This presentation will help you catch a glimpse of our future government, how we can help, and current opportunities. Government 2.0 seems to be about moving forward by getting back to the basics, by the people for the people.
“divide it among the many”
The Government 2.0 ideas about we talk about today are not new. Tim included a full screen-shot of a document by Thomas Jefferson dated February 02, 1816 in his presentation. This “letter” by Thomas Jefferson starts with, “No, my friend, the way to have good and safe government, is not to trust it all to one, but to divide it among many,..”

Presentation: Government as a Platform #aif09
7 Simple Principles of Government as a Platform
- Embrace Open Standards
- Build A Simple System
- Design For Cooperation
- Learn From Your Users, Especially Ones Who Do What You Don’t Expect
- Lower The Barriers to Experimentation
- Build a Culture of Measurement
- If it works, do more of it
- If it doesn’t, stop doing it
- Build systems that respond automatically to user stimuli
- Throw Open the Doors to Partners
Government as a Platform / Anatomy of a Linux System
The anatomy of a linux system can help us visualize open source systems. There is a difference between making web pages/applications and creating a platform. Platforms can be extended and integrated, usually by people other than the creator.

How to get Involved with Government 2.0

The Platform For Change – Over the past fifteen years, the rise of the World Wide Web has resulted in remarkable new possibilities and business models reshaping our culture and our economy. Now the time has come to reshape government. With the proliferation of issues and a scarcity of resources to address them all, leaders inside and outside government are turning to the principles of participation, collaboration, transparency, and efficiency to address the challenges facing our country and the world. This is the agenda of the Gov 2.0 Summit. http://www.gov2summit.com/

Bonus Pick for Gov 2.0
Apps for Democracy was created by iStrategyLabs to fulfill the DC Government’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer’s need for visualizing their Data Catalog for the benefit of citizens, visitors and businesses of DC. They hope this model for technology innovation can be adopted by other municipalities in order to strengthen their own technology communities by developing open source solutions for the good of all. Please contact Peter Corbett, CEO, iStrategyLabs with any questions regarding the Apps for Democracy contest, or to run one in your city. http://www.appsfordemocracy.org/
