The Future of Social Network Marketing by Social Media Thought Leaders

The future of Social Media Marketing has been taking an interesting direction.  Can you imagine getting a discount coupon on your iPhone via text message for a place you are shopping in right now?  Twitter seems to be the sweet spot for marketers.  Twitter is a micro-blogging platform that allows users to post short messages that can contain links to a bigger message or presentation.  I use Twitter to stay in touch with friends and to discover new things about stuff in which I already have an interest.  I don’t really care to have marketing messages clogging up my twitter stream.  I feel lucky to be able to use twitter for free and I am willing to pay for this great communication tool because it has more value than TV for me.  I was thinking that it would be cool to have Twitter integrated into TV.  Would you be interested in commenting on TV programs with your friends during the show?  I guess I’m thinking about Twitter and TV together because I get irritated by boring commercials during my shows.  I just canceled a subscription to one of my favorite magazines because after all the inserts fell all over the floor and I cut out all the ads, I only had a couple of pages left.  I understand that advertisers help control the cost, but there needs to be a balance.

Sales & Marketing Executives International (SMEI) just finished their Social Media Road Show in Canada and here is a quick video with some Social Media Thought Leaders.  The Social Media Road Show is coming to the United States, check their site for dates and locations.

  • What’s your take on the future of Social Media?
  • Will you purchase non-digital items with your iPhone?
  • Will Twitter be embedded into your entertainment?

Birmingham City University Offers a Master’s Degree in Social Media

  • Are you a Twitter Power User?
  • Are you a Facebook Guru?
  • Are you a Pro Blogger?
  • Do you have a passion for Social Media?

You can now pursue your Social Networking Degree in Social Media at Brimingham City University.  I have seen an explosion in the social media field and now that we are incorporating these tools into Enterprise 2.0 Solutions, we may need some kind of Degree or Certification Program.  We have big corporations and businesses investing a lot of money and time into Enterprise 2.0 (Social Media in the business environment).  Our Government also seems very interested in using Social Networking tools in the Government 2.0 space.  Will Degree Programs help these organizations save time and money?  Many of these organizations require a degree & certifications from their developers.  Most decisions about software and social media tools for their enterprise 2.0 solutions have already been made before passing tasks to the developers.  Some of these decisions about the enterprise 2.0 or government 2.0 solutions are getting made by people that don’t know what Twitter, Facebook, Wikis, and Blogs are or don’t use them on a regular basis.  The big mistake happens when decisions are made based the the hype word of the day.  Now, don’t get me wrong, mistakes will be made, that’s the price for being on the edge.  When it comes to Social Media, I say just do it.  Surround yourself with people that have a passion for social media.  Get involved with online groups and have some real discussions.  Have conversations with your target audience and discover how you can help.

Social Media Platforms For Enterprise 2.0 Solutions

Have A Plan For your Social Media

You can spend a lot of time and money building the wrong thing or building the right thing wrong.  Invest time with the stakeholders and users before thinking about technology.  What are your objectives?  What are YOUR benefits to using social media in your enterprise 2.0 solution?  Who is your target audience?  Your target audience will resist participating, if they can not see any benefits.  Your benefits include the benefits of users, managers, and your organization as a whole.  What does your organization hope to accomplish with Enterprise 2.0 or Social Media?

I have discovered many possible social media platforms for my enterprise 2.0 solution.  The choices are almost overwhelming.  Building an enterprise 2.0 solution requires an understanding of the needs and current work-flows.  I don’t believe there is a “One-Size-Fits-All” solution.  You may be familiar with the phrase “No need to re-invent the wheel”.  There are a lot of MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube type of scripts out there that would give you the ability to emulate these web sites in your enterprise 2.0 platform.  You may need to ask yourself about the benefits and examine your objectives.  These sites are great at what they are and may be meeting their owner’s objectives.  How important is it for you to know your colleagues’ favorite movies or music?  Do you have a need for instant web/mobile communications?  A Twitter type of tool is good if your needs require and one or more of your objectives can be met with a micro-blogging solution.  You can piece different blogging, bookmarking, forum, media packages together or work with one of the social media platform bundles below.  You may even want to create a hybrid.
